The TAG has been developed within the same rugged form factor as the Sx range and in addition to SDI and AES generation and analysis brings composite I/O with additional functions activated by purchasing the appropriate option.
The TAG incorporates a number of new interfaces to appeal to those customers looking for a cost effective entry into professional test and measurement.
The new video interfaces include support for SD-SDI and HD-SDI as standard with an option to upgrade to 3G-SDI.
Composite analysis and generation has been included for those regions supporting the transition between analogue and digital switchover. An SFP cage has usefully been integrated into the design principally for optical infrastructure testing (single and dual SFP modules) however the cage can support a range of SFP’s as they become available. Reference input with waveform view and a useful reference generator output have been included.
On the audio side the TAG provides a D15 connector providing both balanced analogue audio and AES I/O. AES waveform display allows visual check for levels and reference lock. Advanced audio features have also been incorporated into the TAG. PHABRIX has worked closely with Dolby to provide support for Dolby E, Dolby D and Dolby D plus and these are all supported and considered by Dolby as the replacement to their now discontinued DM100. A break out cable can be purchased to extend the connectivity of the TAG.
The TAG benefits from PHABRIX’s advanced TCP/IP remote control connection allowing the instrument to be controlled via any standard web browser. Additional data such as screen grab (bmp) and advanced logging can be easily transferred from the instrument which can be situated anywhere within a facility connected by Ethernet.
The TAG is easy to handle fitting in one hand leaving the other free to attach cabling. The colour of the chassis is different to the black of the other Sx products with PHABRIX choosing an easily identifiable blue for the TAG’s aluminium shell.
Control of the unit is achieved using PHABRIX’s intuitive GUI where colour coded instruments are never more than two button presses away from the home menu, a great feature operating equipment in confined spaces. A lithium polymer battery provides 2-3 hours of untethered operation and the instrument can be mains powered while being recharged as a background task.
There is a software option structure to add increased functionality where required. This allows the instrument to add features such as advanced broadcast formats or detailed SDI analysis if needed. The basic unit is very well configured however having an upgrade path later allows the product to be purchased at a low price and extra features added as part of a CAPEX budget.
Simplicity in Use
The PHABRIX SxTAG’s intuitive interface and logical workflow allows the professional engineer to quickly select from analyzer and monitor toolsets (generator optional) for composite (PAL/NTSC), SDI, reference and SFP (optical) inputs. Feedback is smooth and interactive clearly displaying a full range of test and measurement toolsets on its large 4.3″ 16:9 colour TFT screen.
The generator (option) offers a full range of SMPTE standard test patterns both static and animated with analysis provided by waveform, vectorscope and data specific screens. Using simple button press control and a colour coded menu system, each of the different instruments can be selected within three presses.
Specific set-up preferences can be saved into the memory making the PHABRIX SxTAG personal to the specific user if required ready to be used on repeat tasks where commissioning of equipment is important.
The PHABRIX SxTAG offers auto Bi-level, Tri-level and SDI genlock with cross lock capability which is so important for a range of broadcast applications as well as the abilty to generate a broadcast quality studio reference signal. CRC error detection, video aspect ratio detection and SMPTE 351 display are some of the many sophisticated tools as standard. The SxTAG can be further enhanced with a range of options.
PHABRIX has employed the very best state of the art technologies within its product line up. With all products, upgrades are available via password protected codes which can be downloaded and entered into the PHABRIX SxTAG on-the-fly. Firmware upgrades use the in-built Ethernet connection to enter software as it becomes available or via the website under Support.
Extensive audio support
The combined audio features of the PHABRIX SxTAG include support for 16 channels of embedded audio to complete the suite of functions. The AES functionality of the PHABRIX SxTAG allows the user to embed a single external 48kHz synchronous AES stream into the generated video stream. Audio de-embed using the PHABRIX SxTAG’s analyzer function allows the user to extract embedded audio and export it via the AES output. Advanced audio features including Dolby E, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are supported allowing the SxTAG to be considered as a replacement for the discontinued Dolby DM100.

The PHABRIX SxTAG is ideal for studio, OB, and lab environments operating from either the internal battery or via the included mains adaptor. Compared to the expense of heavy bench bound products several PHABRIX SxTAG’s can be obtained allowing an engineer to have his own personal extensive on the go solution for the most sophisticated broadcast T&M requirement.
In addition the Sx range of instruments can be further enhanced with a range of software options available on the platform. A simple software code will unlock these at any time.

The PHABRIX SxTAG has a built-in Ethernet connectivity for remote operation allowing an engineer to interrogate the PHABRIX SxTAG from anywhere with an Ethernet connection. A simple two second press of the control thumb dial takes a snapshot of the PHABRIX SxTAG screen for download later. Sophisticated data logging is also provided for 24/7 monitoring of over 10,000 entries.
